Rule Based Appraisal of Emotions in Drama

چکیده
In stories, the emotional charge of the characters plays an important role in engaging the audience. The emotional states of the characters allow the audience to understand their motivations and to perceive their reactions to a dramatic situation. In this paper, relying on a semantic representation of the drama features, we present and evaluate an emotional rule system that generates the characters’ emotions based on their representation of their mental states.

Annotating Characters' Emotions in Drama
In this paper, we describe a methodology for annotating characters’ emotions in narrative media. Given the semantic annotation of the story, the emotional state of its characters is inferred through SWRL rules that encode the emotion appraisal process. In order to exemplify the model and test the emotional states generated by the SWRL module, we resort to a well-known dramatic situation and we ...
متن کاملAffective Acting: An Appraisal-based Architecture for Agents as Actors
Emotion plays a central role in engaging drama. The conflicts between the characters in a play and the emotions involved in resolving them are the constituents of a dramatic structure, a plot. This premise leads to the assumption that a cast of characters driven by a simulation of the process described by the appraisal theory of emotion might realize dramatic structures by simply interacting in...

This paper presents an ontological approach to the domain of drama. After a description of the drama domain in a cross-cultural and media setting, we introduce the ontology Drammar. Drammar consists of two components, encoding respectively the conceptual model and the SWRL rules. The conceptual model, mainly grounding in AI theories, represents the major concepts of drama, such as agents, actio...
متن کاملAutomatic Constructive Appraisal 1 Running Head: AUTOMATIC CONSTRUCTIVE APPRAISAL Automatic constructive appraisal as a candidate cause of emotion
Critics of appraisal theory have difficulty accepting appraisal (with its constructive flavor) as an automatic process, and hence as a potential cause of most emotions. In response, some appraisal theorists have argued that appraisal was never meant as a causal process but as a constituent of emotional experience. Others have argued that appraisal is a causal process, but that it can be either ...
متن کاملEmotions in Drama Characters and Virtual Agents
Notwithstanding the differences displayed by drama criticism for what concerns the theoretical stance and the aims, the key role played by emotions seems to be a common aspect to most definitions of drama. Although the field of computational drama has acknowledged this trend, we argue that the role of emotions in character design deserves more attention, as it is the key to establish a distinct...
